There are many classic sofas in the world but what we want to talk about right now is one classic sofa which not many people knew about it. That is Knole sofa. Knole sofa was invented in early 1600s and considered as the first innovation of sofa since in previous centuries sofa had not existed and benches was common used by people in those era.
According to Wikipedia Knole sofa or known as Knole settee was made in the 17th century when the owner of reputable house at Knole, Kent, England requested a new kind of chair on which he would sat to receive his guest. So the owner of the house who was the Sackville-Wests would be seen as the monarch of the area. Because of this reason, the first Knole sofa had shape like throne and looked not comfortable. It had depth seat with adjustable side arms. The side arms which could be adjustable on the preferable heights. One of Knole sofa we can see today is the sofa with the wooden finials at rear corner top. On these finials there are heavy decorative braids to tie the side arms with the back of sofa. The braids knot can be loosen to allow the side arms angle down or drop down so person who sit on the sofa can change the sofa into a daybed.
The reason of why the maker put built-in back on the sofa was to allow the chair put in the center of the room and the monarch could rest their back. They could not do that before Knole sofa was invented since they only had benches and benches had to be pushed against the wall in order to rest their back. While the high side arms and backs were made to give privacy for the owner from prying eyes around their house.
Though Knole sofa is known as the legacy of historical royal furniture of England, the form itself was not made like the original England style. The historians believed that Knole sofa’s form was likely derived from French or any other countries in Europe. It did not large like sofas we all know in this century, in fact it almost similar like Otto two-seat chairs. But four hundred years ago Knole sofa was considered as the grandeur icon. Only royal household which afforded to make this sofa and it often covered by a canopy just like the throne in mid-century era.
Because Knole sofa was considered as icon of grandeur and aristocrat style and design, many England artists in those era used Knole sofa as the feature in their painting. In later centuries, Knole sofa has been copied and reproduced by almost every manufacture in every era, from Victoria times to this modern times. Now Knole sofa has widely known not only in England but also around the world and not only royal household who has this Knole sofa but also common people interest to have Knole sofa and give classical style at their house.
